INNER SOUND

Works by Henry Dean

During the summer months, artist and Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) professor, Henry Dean, imbedded ten panels on easels in the tidal waters that surround the Maritime Center. Over a two-month period the panels were ‘painted’ by the tides. Dean will discuss this unique installment and his artistic technique at the Oct. 27 Tuesday Talk. Come early and explore some of these panels, as well as other sketches and work by Dean, in the Habersham Rotating Exhibit Room at the Maritime Center. The exhibition will be featuredOctober 27th through December 28th. See attached flyer.

Multi-media artist Henry Dean lives and works in Savannah, GA. He is a professor of drawing and design in the School of Foundations Studies at SCAD. Dean’s first tidal installation, “The Marsh is Art” was done in 2003. Dean approaches installation art as an immersive process that allows him to engage knowledge of geography and history, while paying active attention to the environment, combining intentionality while “inviting” natural forces to play their part. Dean utilizes ambient strategies to facilitate chance, allowing uncertainty to enter the art making process.

Auctions America, the official auction house of the Hilton Head Island Motoring Festival & Concours d’Elegance, officially rounds out its 2015 calendar this month with a boutique afternoon sale on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, October 31. “While Auctions America is best known for its multi-day sales, we’re focusing on a smaller, more elite group of automobiles for our final auction of the year,” says Megan Boyd, Car Specialist, Auctions America. “The select offering of cars has been hand-picked by our team of specialists to complement the diversity and heritage that is showcased by the Hilton Head Island Motoring Festival & Concours d’Elegance and we are looking forward to celebrating the hobby in one of America’s most scenic locations.”

The docket for the Halloween auction runs the gamut of automotive production, from quintessential American classics through to superb European sports and GT cars. The auction will also feature an exciting series of poster cars from the 1970s and 80s, as well as modern collectibles to cater to growing collector interest in these segments.

ICONIC POSTER CARS

Poster cars from the 1970s and 80s have been trending in recent months, as those who adorned their bedroom walls with pictures of these cars during their youth are now in the financial position to realize their dreams. When it comes to poster cars of the 1980s in particular, there is perhaps nothing more iconic than the Lamborghini Countach. Designed as a successor to the Lamborghini Miura, the Countach turned the automotive world completely upside down when it was unveiled at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show. In celebration of its 25th anniversary, Lamborghini released an updated and slightly restyled version of its celebrated Countach, which went on to become the most desirable iteration of the car in the eyes of many. The Hilton Head Island auction will present an exceptionally original example of this model, a1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary Edition. Finished in highly desirable white with a black leather interior, the vehicle on offer was delivered new to the United States. Presented in remarkably well-preserved and maintained condition, it shows just 10,900 km from new and is expected to garner strong interest from collectors when it crosses the auction block (Est. $340,000 – $380,000).

Other notable poster cars slated for the sale include:

  • an attractive 1972 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS, striking in Silver over Red and fitted with desirable Daytona style seats and fender flares, which were added after the car left Maranello (Est, $290,000 – $330,000);
  • a stunning, black on black 1977 Ferrari 308 GTB, a fantastic example of a first-year 308 and one of the last great carbureted Ferraris, showing just 2700 miles (Est. $100,000 – $125,000); and
  • an instantly recognizable 1982 DeLorean DMC-12; best identified by its appearance in “Back to the Future”, the DeLorean is known for its distinctive gullwing doors and iconic stainless steel body. The example on offer is presented in largely original condition (Est. $25,000 – $30,000).

MODERN PERFORMANCE

For those with a penchant for recent design and performance, Auctions America’s Hilton Head Island event also features a number of modern collectibles. Among standout lots are an ‘as new’ 2002 BMW Z8 Roadster, one of the lowest mileage examples in existence with a mere 543 miles (Est. $280,000 – $320,000); and, a well-documented 2002 Porsche 911 GT2 Coupe, built with a 3.6 liter turbocharged engine, capable of propelling the car to a blisteringly fast 198 mph (Est. $140,000 – $160,000).
