Black History Month with Cultural Celebrations

February is Black History Month, a month honoring the shared stories and contributions of African Americans who have shaped our nation and also Hilton Head Island.

During this month-long celebration, the Town of Hilton Head Island encourages you to take advantage of the many incredible events being hosted to highlight the Island’s Gullah Geechee culture and other significant contributions of local African Americans. Experience live musical performances, special gatherings, art gallery shows, festivals and more. These wonderful celebrations are fun and educational opportunities for the whole family to enjoy.

Freedom Day Celebration Hosted by Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park

This free program explores black resistance in the fight for freedom and honors the life and legacy of Robert Smalls, who was born into slavery in Beaufort, South Carolina. Smalls later won freedom for himself and his family, and became a prominent leader in the community during the Reconstruction era, including service in both the state and national legislature. Special guests include Michael Boulware Moore, the great-great grandson of Robert Smalls; Gullah artist Quentin Smalls and the Claflin University Concert Choir. Gullah Market and Block Party: An Arts, Crafts and Food Expo

Celebration of African American Authors

An afternoon experience that shines the light on African American authors and the important narratives revealed in their latest publications. The featured guest author is former NFL player Aaron Maybin. A complimentary lunch will be provided at this free event.

Hilton Head’s Biggest Jeep Event

October 7-8

Hampton Inn and the Island Recreation Association is proud to announce Jeep Island is back! “Last year,
over 100 Jeeps joined the event, and even more are expected this year,” says Special Event Director
Joe Cain.


The weekend kicks off with live music Friday night, October 7 at Lowcountry Celebration Park. Local
band RetroRoxx opens the concert from 5-6:30pm, then Idlewild South, The Allman Brothers Band plays
from 6:30-9 pm.


Saturday October 8 is the Jeep Island main event combined with the Kiwanis Chili Cookoff. Jeep Island is

In addition to the event, there is a 1999 Jeep Wrangler Sport up for grabs! Raffle tickets are selling fast,

Hilton Head Oyster Festival

The Island Recreation Association and South State Bank are pleased to announce the Hilton Head Oyster Festival is back again! “We are preparing for another great crowd,” says Special Event Director Joe Cain.

Friday November 11 from 5-8pm: All You Can Eat Event at Shelter Cove Park. All you can eat steamed local oysters, lowcountry boil, pulled pork, seafood chowder & chili. Drinks sold separately. Live music and limited availability. Live music: Crosstown Traffic. $55 for adults, $45 for children. Tickets and all purchases inside the festival need to be made through the Crowdblink App.

Saturday November 12 from 10 am-4 pm: Main Event at Lowcountry Celebration Park. Restaurants compete for best Seafood Dish. Admission $8 before Oct 1, $10 after Oct 1 | children 10 and under are FREE. Includes admission to the event to enjoy live music and browse local artisan pop up shops. Food, beverages, and kid’s activities sold separately. Hilton Head Announces 2021 Annual Crescendo Celebration of Arts and Culture

The Office of Cultural Affairs for the Town of Hilton Head Island and the Arts Council of Hilton Head announces the Fifth Annual Crescendo Celebration of Arts & Culture from Sunday, October 10 – Saturday, November 13, 2021.

Organized in honor of October as National Arts and Humanities Month, this regional celebration highlights and showcases the vast array of arts, culture and history organizations, individual artists, performers and authors residing and working on Hilton Head Island.

This event, last held two years ago, is expected to attract more than 10,000 people from all over the United States, Canada and Europe. It will feature more than 100 unique arts and cultural programs, concerts, theatrical productions, museum and gallery exhibits, lectures, poetry readings, dance performances, historical tours, hands-on arts experiences and educational offerings.

Signature events for the 2021 Crescendo include the following:

  • Sunday, October 10: La Isla Magazine’s Latin Music Festival at Shelter Cove Community Park.
  • Tuesday, October 12: Crescendo Community Celebration featuring all of the arts and culture organizations on the Island at Shelter Cove Community Park.
  • Wednesday, October 20: “Volumes of Light: The Lanterns of Chantelle Rytter” at Coastal Discovery Museum.
  • Saturday, October 22: Symphonic Pops, presented by  Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra at Lowcountry Celebration Park.
  • Wednesday, October 27 – Thursday, October 28: Jazz for All Ages Jazz Festival at Hilton Head Beach & Tennis.
  • Friday, November 5th – Saturday, November 6th: Clicquot: A Revolutionary Musical Concert at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina.
  • Saturday, November 13th: Hilton Head Island Lantern Parade at South Forest Beach.

Other highly anticipated events during the run of Crescendo include the opening weekend of the holiday favorite “The Nutcracker,” the Lantern Parade Eve Drive-Thru Safari at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, Hilton Head Island Concours d’Elegance, “Kinky Boot” at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, Hilton Head Island Oyster Fest, and costumed character tours at Historic Fort Mitchel, and Zion Cemetery and Baynard Mausoleum.

Heirs’ Property and Sustainable Forestry Webinar

The Center for Heirs’ Property Preservation is hosting a free webinar on Heirs’ Property and Sustainable Forestry at 6 p.m., Monday, December 7th.

Presenters will discuss the risks and rights of heirs’ property and how to make your land work for you and build generational wealth.

“Protecting heirs’ property and learning how to better use the land is one of the top concerns for Gullah Geechee communities on Hilton Head Island,” said Sheryse DuBose, PhD, the Historic Neighborhoods Administrator for the Town of Hilton Head Island. “The Town is encouraging families and individuals to take advantage of this free webinar, especially as they continue to deal with family property that has been passed down through the years,” DuBose said.

Hilton Head Senior Center Opens

The Island Recreation Association is pleased to announce Christina Menjares as the new director of the Hilton Head Island Senior Center. Christina graduated from the University of Mount Olive in 2014 with a Bachelor’s degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies.


Previously the Activities Coordinator at Brookdale Hilton Head, Menjares found her calling offering activities and programs for independent and assisted living residents within the community. Christina has already begun organizing and implementing programming for the Senior Center with a unique twist: opportunities to Zoom in and socialize from home.

Christina says, “I know how difficult and uncertain times are right now, and I hope to be able to offer you new and exciting programs from the Senior Center, and beyond.”

Wing Fest Announced

2020 Hilton Head Wingfest presented by Hargray

The Island Recreation Association and Hargray Communications are proud to present the 25th annual Wingfest where over 7,000 lbs of chicken wings will be served.  Wingfest will be on Saturday, March 21, 2020 from 11 am -5 pm at Shelter Cove Community Park. 

Admission is $8 with children 10 & under free. Concessions and activities sold separately.

Twenty local restaurants will cook their best wings to compete for the 2020 Best Wing of Hilton Head.  There will be many activities such as a kid’s zone, rock climbing wall and bungee jump.  Catch a March Madness game on the big screen provided by Custom Audio Video.  Vote for your favorite wing at the Hargray People’s Choice Booth.  Participate in the wing eating competition or the kids bobbing contest.  Live music will be provided by Bobby Lee and The Magpies, Deas Guyz and The Naked Karate Girls.
