In the Western Desert of Australia is a massive crater nearly 3,000 feet in diameter, created by a meteorite believed to have weighed some 50,000 tons. Aboriginal Australians called the crater Kandimalal; in their “Dreamtime” (i.e., creation) legends, the crater had been formed by the passage of a rainbow snake out of the earth. Identified as a meteor crater in 1947 by American geologist Frank Reeves, the crater – one of the continent’s most acclaimed geologic features – is now known as Wolfe Creek Crater.
When Reeves’ daughter, anthropologist Dr. Peggy Reeves Sanday, first visited the crater in 1999, she learned that it was part of the traditional territory of several Aboriginal groups – but that, as “traditional owners” of the crater, they were forbidden from speaking openly of their sacred knowledge of the site. They did, however, agree to share their stories through collaborative paintings. Sanday’s quest for a perspective on the meteor crater evolved into an exploration of Aboriginal aesthetics and cosmology, where the Rainbow Serpent plays a pivotal role as the primary creative agent of not only the crater but of all features of the natural environment.
Out of this collaboration came an exhibition titled Track of the Rainbow Serpent: Australian Aboriginal Paintings of the Wolfe Creek Crater, which will be on display from April 27 through September 14, 2014. Museum hours are 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, 1-4 p.m. Sundays. This exhibition was organized by the University of Pennsylvania of Archaeology and Anthropology from the collection of Peggy Sanday.
Curated by Dr. Sanday herself, the exhibit comprises 19 paintings which portray the Dreamtime stories of the origins of the Aboriginals’ ancestral lands, with most describing the creation of the crater. Works by different artists portray subtle variations in the story, depending on who is doing the telling. Commentary by the curator explains and interprets these stories.
The Aboriginal paintings in the exhibition, painted in acrylic on canvas, were created in a range of sizes, shapes and colors, from vibrant to earthy. Some offer images that bring the viewer in from an aerial perspective. Also included are regional Aboriginal art and stories not directly related to the Wolfe Creek Crater but rich in the native people’s complex worldview.
Dr. Sanday is Professor Emerita of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania. She is the author of several books, including Aboriginal Paintings of the Wolfe Creek Crater: Track of the Rainbow Serpent (2007); Women at the Center: Life in a Modern Matriarchy (2002), based on her studies of the Minangkabau tribe of Indonesia; and several works on the anthropology of gender.
All objects are on loan from the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, Philadelphia, PA, by which all rights are reserved.

United States Navy veteran and television personality Montel Williams will serve as Grand Marshal of this year’s Memorial Day Weekend Parade on Ocean Boulevard. The parade begins at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 24, and is a highlight of the community’s Military Appreciation Days each May. The month-long celebration is a “thank you” to our dedicated service men and women, past and present – along with their families – for all that they do on our behalf.
As Grand Marshal, Montel Williams will lead the Ocean Boulevard parade, then greet fans afterward at the Military Appreciation Days Family Picnic, between Eighth and Ninth Avenues North. Everyone’s invited to enjoy the festivities, which include military exhibits and live music from the Andrew Thielen Big Band. The picnic lunch, prepared by the Omar Chefs Shriners, is free for active-duty military, veterans and their families, including National Guard and Reserve.
The Military Appreciation Days Committee is excited to have Montel Williams as Grand Marshal. “Committee members sought a celebrity with a military background, and Montel Williams is a dynamic choice,” said Mark Kruea, Myrtle Beach’s public information officer. “Not only did he serve, but he still supports our veterans and their families, has traveled to Afghanistan to meet with front-line troops, and looks for ways to give back to the military.”
Williams is perhaps best known as host of The Montel Williams Show, which ran for 17 years, but that fame followed 15 years of active duty service in the U.S. military. Williams enlisted in the Marines after high school in 1976, graduated from boot camp at Parris Island and was sent to Desert Warfare Training in California. Impressed with the young platoon guide, his supervisors recommended him to the Naval Academy Prep School.
After prep school, Williams attended the US Naval Academy, graduating in 1980 with an engineering degree and a minor in International Security Affairs. Beginning his Navy career as a midshipman, he served in intelligence and cryptology. Williams was stationed in Guam, California and Maryland, including three years aboard submarines, and rose to the rank of lieutenant. He received two Meritorious Service Medals, two Navy Commendation Medals, two Navy Achievement Medals and other citations.
While in the military, Williams discovered a gift for public speaking, counseling his crew and service members’ families. He was asked to speak to young people about the importance of leadership and overcoming obstacles, which led to a national tour. In 1989, he left active duty service to pursue motivational speaking full-time, and that ultimately led to his TV talk show. He retired as a lieutenant commander in the US Navy Reserve after 22 years of service.

Another highlight of Military Appreciation Days is a visit from a traveling version of the Vietnam Memorial Wall. The Wall that Heals will be on display around the clock, May 14-18, at Grand Park near The Market Common. “Reading the names, searching for and remembering a lost friend or family member, is extremely moving,” Kruea added. “It’s such a simple, yet powerful memorial.”
Myrtle Beach area attractions, accommodations and restaurants also are offering military and veteran discounts during the month of May. In addition to the big parade and picnic, other activities during Military Appreciation Days include a 5K walk/run and the traditional Memorial Day ceremony on the Convention Center Plaza.

Outdoor enthusiasts and families have another reason to visit Wilmington, North Carolina. On March 14-16, the 6th Annual Cape Fear Wildlife Expo returns to Wilmington to showcase the state’s natural resources, wildlife, conservation, and outdoor recreation. The family-friendly event features more than 100 exhibitors with interactive displays, intriguing workshops and educational activities at the riverfront Wilmington Convention Center. Celebrity guest Mike Stroff from The Sportsman Channel’s television show “Outdoor Savage” and the hosts of Big E TV’s “Both Sides of the Fence” (FOX SportSouth) will greet fans and sign autographs.
The Cape Fear Wildlife Expo—a Southeast Tourism Society Top 20 Event—is committed to encourage youth to enjoy the outdoors through hunting, fishing, and other outdoor-related sports and events. Interactive stations will provide youth with hands-on experience in archery, saltwater fly fishing, outdoor survival, geocaching, duck calls, water pollution, the aquatic web, and forestry practices. Attendees will also have the opportunity to experience the NC Wildlife Resources Commission safari trailer and mobile aquarium.
