Geriatric Monologues at Murrells Inlet Community Theater

With any luck, we all will get older. Writer Jim R. Rogers, known to most folks on the Grand Strand as a parenting educator, decided to put his thoughts on growing older – the joys, the pains, the epiphanies, the laughs – into poems, published in his book “Starts and Stops Along the Way.”JIM AT ZAPATA 2

Now, a selection of his insights, captured as the “Geriatric Monologues,” have already received  acclaim as the featured play in the Atlantic Stage New Play competition, and will be performed in June at the Murrells Inlet Community Theater.

Jim’s reflections are poignant and funny: “As we grow older, we start disappearing.  Lots of people don’t see us anymore, rarely listen to our stories of who we were, when we were, and being an elder carries very little respect in our youth- oriented high tech world. I wanted more people to understand the process, what we go through, how we feel and that we are still alive and still have much to offer.  Once I wore two different shoes.  Nobody noticed.”

The Geriatric Monologues world premiere is June 17 at 7:30 p.m. Other performances are: 7:30 p.m. June 18, 24 and 25; and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.  on June 19 and 26.

Who: Jim R. Rogers, poet, writer, parenting expert and playwright

What: Geriatric Monologues performances

When: June 17, 18, 24, 25 at 7:30 p.m.; June 19 and 26 at 2 p.m.

Where: Murrells Inlet Community Theater, 4462 Murrells Inlet Road

Tickets: $15; call box office at 843-651-4152 for reservations.

Odyssey of the Sea Turtle Program at Museum of Coastal Carolina

The sea turtle nesting season has begun. Several confirmed nests have already been reported on Brunswick County, North Carolina beaches. Want to learn more about sea turtles? Every Monday at 3:30 pm this summer, the Museum of Coastal Carolina – in conjunction with the Ocean Isle Beach Sea Turtle Protection Organization (OIBSTPO) – is presenting a program called Odyssey of the Sea Turtle. Jim Boyce and volunteers from OIBSTPO will discuss the life cycle of sea turtles, focusing especially on the loggerhead sea turtles that nest on our beaches every summer. The presentation will include a 14-minute video and a question-and-answer session at the end. Learn what you can do to help protect these magnificent animals.

Jim Boyce and his wife, Deb, are island coordinators for OIBSTPO. They are licensed by the NC Wildlife Commission and coordinate a network of approximately 50 volunteers in a year-round effort to promote sea turtles and educate the public about them. Volunteers are especially active between May and late September when female sea turtles dig their nests and lay their eggs. Volunteers identify and mark the nests, try to protect the nests from predators, keep an eye on hatchlings as they make their way from their nests into the ocean, and transport sick and injured sea turtles to the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center at Topsail Island. For more information about OIBSTPO, visit www.oibseaturtles.org.

The Museum of Coastal Carolina is located at 21 East Second Street, Ocean Isle Beach, NC.  The museum is open from 10-8 Monday-Thursday, 10-5 Friday, and 10-1:30 Saturday. Admission to the museum is free for members. Non-member all-day admission (including NC sales tax) is $9.50 for adults, $8.50 for seniors, $7.50 for children (3-12), and free for age 2 and under. The Art of the Brick® Debuts at Myrtle Beach Art Museum

The Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum will host The Art of the Brick®, an exhibition featuring large-scale sculptures created out of iconic LEGO® bricks by New York-based artist Nathan Sawaya. The event begins Saturday, June 11, 2016,
The Art of the Brick is one of the largest and most popular art exhibits touring the globe. CNN hailed The Art of the Brick as one of the top twelve “must-see exhibitions in the world.”
“This year alone, we’ve visited Australia, South Africa and Taiwan,” said Sawaya. “We are thrilled to be bringing this collection to Myrtle Beach, SC.”
Like most young kids, Sawaya started playing with LEGO at a young age. But unlike most kids, Sawaya never stopped building, creating and exploring his own imagination. The result has solidified his place in pop culture history and he is making an indelible mark on the art world as well. The award-winning artist has catapulted the iconic LEGO brick into an art medium all its own, transforming this construction toy into awe-inspiring and thought provoking sculptures.
The centerpiece of Sawaya’s collection of sculptures, as well as arguably his most famous piece of artwork, is entitled Yellow, a LEGO torso of a man ripping open his chest while yellow plastic bricks cascade out of the open chest cavity. Sawaya has made a name for himself by creating out of LEGO exacting replicas of the human form in various states of emotion, including anger, love, depression and joy. Concurrently on display at the Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum and for the run of the exhibition will be Sawaya’s unique multi-media collaboration with award-winning Australian photographer Dean West, entitled In Pieces. The two artists spent years traveling and working together to blend their crafts resulting in the In Pieces collection of visually stunning hyper-realistic images that are exhibited with corresponding and complimentary three-dimensional LEGO sculptures.
“I use LEGO bricks as my medium because I enjoy seeing people’s reactions to artwork created from something with which they are familiar. Everyone can relate to it since it is a toy that many children have at home. I want to elevate this simple plaything to a place that it has never been before. I want to elevate this simple plaything to a place it has never been before. I also appreciate the cleanliness of the medium. The right angles.  The distinct lines. As so often in life, it is a matter of perspective. Up close, the shape of the brick is distinctive. But from a distance, those right angles and distinct lines change to curves,” Sawaya said.
The Art of the Brick will be on view at the Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum, 3100 S. Ocean Boulevard, Myrtle Beach, SC from Saturday, June 11 through Saturday, September 10, 2016.  The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1 – 4 p.m. Admission is free; however donations are suggested.  Please check the website MyrtleBeachArtMuseum.org for extended summer hours.

About Nathan Sawaya
Nathan Sawaya is an acclaimed New York-based artist who creates awe-inspiring artwork out of a toy. His art focuses on large-scale sculptures using only LEGO® bricks. Sawaya was the first artist to ever take LEGO® into the art world and his touring exhibition – The Art Of The Brick® – has entertained and inspired millions of art lovers and enthusiasts from Australia, Taiwan, Singapore, China and around the world. CNN heralded, “The Art Of The Brick® is one of the top 12 must-see exhibits in the world!” Originally from Oregon, Sawaya’s childhood dreams were always fun and creative. He drew cartoons, wrote stories, perfected magic tricks and of course also played with LEGO®. His days were filled with imagination. When it came time for college, Sawaya moved to New York City, attended NYU and became a lawyer. But after years of million dollar mergers and corporate acquisitions on Park Avenue, Sawaya realized he would rather be sitting on the floor creating art than sitting in a board room negotiating contracts. He walked away from the law and took an artistic risk on LEGO®. Now Sawaya is an author, speaker and one of the most popular, award-winning contemporary artists of our time. Dr. Mark Baumgartner will present a program June 7 at 6 pm at the Museum of Coastal Carolina’s Sand Bar Lecture Series called North Atlantic Right Whales: The Science and Conservation of a Species on the Brink of Extinction. The Sand Bar Lecture Series is sponsored by OIB Surf & Java.

North Atlantic right whales are a critically endangered species. There are only about 500 left in the world and, as Dr. Baumgartner points out, “they live right here in our backyard along the U.S. east coast.” Dr. Baumgartner will discuss the plight of the right whale, the biology of these extraordinary animals, advances in technology that allow us to keep tabs on their whereabouts, and how science is helping promote the conservation of this species. Dr. Baumgartner maintains that “there is much we can still do to help the right whale survive.”

Mark Baumgartner is a marine ecologist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He has studied marine animals for the past 24 years off the U.S. east coast, the Gulf of Mexico, in the U.S. Arctic, and as far away as the Bay of Bengal in the Indian Ocean. Dr. Baumgartner is interested in using science to promote the conservation of endangered large whales. He uses a variety of approaches to study whales including tags, acoustics, and robots.

CAPE FEAR SHAKESPEARE ON-THE-GREEN FESTIVAL

The time is nigh and the stage is set for the 2016 Cape Fear Shakespeare on the Green festival, held every weekend in June at the Hugh Morton Greenfield Lake Amphitheater. Now in its 24th season, the annual free-to-the-public Cape Fear Shakespeare on the Green festival, in association with the City of Wilmington, will present two shows: “Twelfth Night” and “The Two Gentlemen of Verona.”

Themes of William Shakespeare’s plays continue to resonate with modern audiences. Have you ever wondered where oft-quoted lines originated? For instance: “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them…” and “They do not love, that do not show their love.” These memorable quotes are from Shakespeare’s masterpieces “Twelfth Night” and “The Two Gentlemen of Verona,” respectively. Both plays are slated for the 2016 season of Cape Fear Shakespeare on the Green and will be staged on select dates in June.

The Cape Fear Shakespeare Youth Company kicks off the season performing The Bard’s first romantic comedy, “The Two Gentlemen of Verona.” This playful show, directed by CFSOTG artistic director Cherri McKay, is about privileged youths with no real responsibility who are living in a world where adults are on the parameter. Cape Fear Shakespeare Youth Company performances are suitable for families and will be staged at 8:00 p.m., Monday through Wednesday, June 6-8 and Monday through Thursday, June 13-16.

“Twelfth Night,” directed by Adrian Monte, is this year’s feature production. Among Shakespeare’s most perfect comedies, the romantic plot revolves around separated twins, misplaced passions, and mistaken identity. Meanwhile, a satirical subplot unfolds as a self-deluded steward who dreams of becoming a count is derailed by the merrymakers he wishes to suppress. Put all these people together and you have a delightful poignant symphony of miscommunication, misconception and non-comprehension, all fueled by romantic desire. Add the lush backdrop of Greenfield Park and you have the makings of a perfect summer outing. Performances are staged each weekend at 8:00 p.m., beginning Saturday, June 4 through Sunday, June 26. Performance dates for “Twelfth Night” are June 4-5; 10-12; 17-19; and 24-26, with an additional Actor Appreciation show on Thursday, June 23.

Cape Fear Shakespeare on the Green is among Wilmington’s most anticipated summer traditions. Visitors and residents enjoy free productions of The Bard’s works in a family atmosphere at the Hugh MortonGreenfield Lake Amphitheater. Located in the heart of Wilmington on the lake’s edge, the stage is surrounded by stately moss-draped cypress trees and well-manicured gardens of Greenfield Park. With 900 seats, the amphitheater is the only one of its kind in Southeastern North Carolina and is among Wilmington’s largest entertainment venues. Performances of Cape Fear Shakespeare on the Green are free to the public and donations are always welcome and appreciated. Gates open at 6:30 pm; shows begin at 8:00 p.m.

For an evening of laid-back fun that brings the arts and nature together, arrive early and bring a picnic or enjoy a snack from the concession stand. Greenfield Lake Amphitheater is located at 1941 Amphitheater Drive, Wilmington. For more details call 910-399-2878, email shakespeareonthegreen03@yahoo.com or visit www.capefearshakespeare.com.
