The Life & Times of Rickey Godfrey

Nashville Blues Artist To Present Program at Sunset River  Marketplace

Nashville guitarist Rickey Godfrey is scheduled to speak and perform at Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, N.C. on Wednesday, April 13, as part of the gallery’s Creative Exchange series. The presentation, which is titled The Life and Times of Rickey Godfrey,  starts at 11 a.m. and runs through 12:30 p.m. Cost is $7 and includes lunch. Due to limited seating, reservations are required.

The talented musician will perform some of his music as he talks about the challenges of growing up blind and functioning in a world that is largely sight-oriented.

Blind since birth, he started studying at the age of seven, while attending the South Carolina School for the Blind. He studied classical piano and voice, and, at age 13, began playing guitar as well.

At 16, Rickey Godfrey joined his first band. He and his brother Ronnie Godfrey, also blind, soon formed their own band, Garfeel Ruff, which signed with Capitol Records in 1978 and became one of the most popular bands in the S.C. Upstate.

Since moving to Nashville in 1993, Godfrey has worked with artists such as Donna Fargo, Rufus Thomas, Junior Walker, Sam Moore, Billy Preston, Clifford Curry, E. G. Kight, Sonny Turner and Bill Pinkney, performing throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe.

In 2003, Godfrey formed the Rickey Godfrey Band, which catered to beach and blues audiences in the Carolinas. He released two CDs while he had the band.  Soul Sensations earned four 2004 CBMA awards including Song of the Year for “Can’t Change My Heart.” During 2005, Godfrey posted three additional Top Tens from the album with “No One Loves You Better Than Me,” “Whatever It Takes” and “If Ten’ll Kill Me, Give Me Nine.” Once In a Lifetime Love, released 1n 2006, was also well received, earning awards for Blues Album of the Year, Group of the Year and Group Album of the Year.

Since disbanding the group, Godfrey has been a sought-after composer, session player and touring musician –including a performance with the Chocolate Thunder Band at the 2009 Montreal Jazz Festival.  He has also released his fourth solo CD, Nasty Man, a powerhouse of a record – solidly blues-driven with jazz and funk influences that give it an edge and a sound unique to the uber-talented musician.

Rickey Godfrey has been nominated by the Music City Blues Society as both Guitarist and Keyboard Player of the Year. He earned a 2008 Marion James Musician’s Aid Society award and, in 2009, Nashville’s Best Blues Keyboardist. In late 2010, the N.C. Cape Fear Blues Society chose Nasty Man as its nomination for Best Self Produced CD at the Blues Foundation awards.

Ginny Lassiter, owner of Sunset River Marketplace said, “The gallery is a big supporter of the performing arts, and we are delighted that Rickey has time to come and talk to us.”

To reserve your spot, call the gallery at 910-575-5999 or send an email to lassiter@sunsetrivermarketplace.com.

Lowcountry in your Pocket

The South Carolina Lowcountry is in your phone.  Things to see and do throughout Beaufort County are covered in our app Hilton Head Essentials, published by Sutro Media this month. It’s available for download from the iTunes app store for iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch devices.

More than 800 images with 130 items showcase the coastal area.

It includes a Google map for each entry; one-touch phone calling to each business; one-touch access to the individual website; immediate access to selected YouTube or user reviews; relevant hours and pricing information. Categories include where to stay, where to eat, shopping, attractions, selected upcoming events plus a bit of history and local culture throughout Hilton Head, Bluffton, Beaufort and the neighboring rural areas and towns.

Authors Liz and Charlie Mitchell, long-time South Carolina coastal residents, created the app in partnership with Sutro Media. Their first app Myrtle Beach’s Best was launched in December with a new version published in January.

Updates of Hilton Head Essentials are planned for additional golf and event coverage. Local businesses are invited to follow the authors on Twitter or the Hilton Head Essentials Facebook page or contact the authors via their website.  Event schedules and updated information may be considered for inclusion in future versions. Businesses do not pay to be listed, and the authors base choices on personal experiences and availability of quality content.

The Mitchells also co-authored two travel books published by Channel Lake in the 2010 Tourist Town series. The books available from major booksellers and from Amazon are Hilton Head: A Guide to the South Carolina Lowcountry and Myrtle Beach: A Guide to South Carolina’s Grand Strand. Both books are sold at Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash where the authors appear for periodic special events.

The Hilton Head guidebook also is available in Beaufort at Cuthbert House Inn and at the Beaufort County Black Chamber of Commerce and in Bluffton at Rose Hill Mansion.

The much-awaited new blues recording from American artist Rickey Godfrey is finally here and it’s nasty, so get down with it and have some fun! Nasty Man (Oct. 9, 2010/Serenity Hill) is a powerhouse of a record – solidly blues-driven with jazz and funk influences that give it an edge and a sound unique to the uber-talented musician.

The 12-track recording showcases Godfrey’s mind-boggling skills on both Telecaster and keys. According to Godfrey, who also produced the album, he intentionally kept the instrumentation sparse. “I didn’t want an over-produced, over-polished result,” he said. “This is a blues album, and I wanted a raw sound. I love the spontaneous stuff that happened in the studio, like Don Wise’s sax riff on “Let’s Get Busy.”

It’s obvious that the lyrics were just as important to this singer/songwriter. Godfrey wrote or co-wrote ten of the album tracks. “I Want Me a Nasty Woman,” the opening tune, is an unabashed appeal to women everywhere to embrace their inner nasty selves. With its cleverly written lyrics, guitar work and vocals that come from the gut, “Nasty Woman” sets the tone for Nasty Man. Co-written with Richard Fleming, it’s already proving to be one of the album’s most popular during live performances.

Other notable tunes include “Don’t Argue In the Kitchen,” a humorous tale that proves jealousy and kitchen utensils are a recipe for disaster and “Don’t Get Your Money Where You Get Your Honey,” sharply crafted advice sure to be ignored, despite the drone keyboard warning us to beware – and behave. Slowing down the pace and the mood is “Johnny Jones,” Godfrey’s tribute to his friend and Jimi Hendrix’ mentor who died in 2009.

The only songs not written or co-written by Godfrey are “Allergic To Mink” by Gary Erwin, aka Shrimp City Slim, and “When You’re Cool (the Sun Shines All the Time),” penned by Gary Nicholson, Hank DeVito and Kevin Welch.
