South Carolina Nonobjective Artist to Exhibit in June

IMG_3026Greenville artist Jane Doyle will hold her second exhibition of nonobjective paintings June 3-30 in Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg Gallery at Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg. In the exhibit – A Common Thread — some 20 acrylic paintings will be on display that reveal her talent for creating complimentary hues to produce paintings that are both enjoyable and pleasing to the eye. This exhibit will be free for public viewing Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1-5 p.m.

Doyle’s work primarily consists of what she describes as an “imprecise abstract format” flowing from the conscious and continuous study of the interaction of color, light, mark and form. The result is that she is able to paint in a style that combines her love and appreciation of color with informality creating a truly revealing insight into how her work is experimental and influenced by Diebenkorn, Frankenthaler and other abstract artists of that time.

Doyle grew up in South Carolina and has lived here most of her life. Her study of art began as a hobby about 20 years ago and developed into a passion. “I have studied under the guidance of national and local artists at various workshops from the Carolinas to Florida,” she said. “Visiting galleries to analyze the works of representational artists, impressionists and many other contemporary artists has helped me to understand color, light and shadow.  It was only when my studies led me to the works of Diebekorn, de Kooning and Frankenthaler that I knew that working in the imprecise abstract format was where I wanted to be. With this influence and further study, along with imagination and life’s experiences, I set out to forge my own visual statement. Slowly I have discovered the secret of my art, which consists of a meditation on color and the expression of combining complimentary hues that always inspire my work. By working in a nonobjective format, I have the ability to combine my love for color with informality of form to express the style that I paint in. I am constantly revising my intentions.  My color themes present different phases of my studies, which are evolving and progressive.”

Her work has been exhibited extensively and includes First Citizens in Columbia and Anderson, Trident Technical College in Greenwood, SC School of Medicine in Greenville, and County Bank in Greenville.  Her juried shows include South Carolina Watercolor Society 2000; McCormick County Art Show 2001; Union County Art Show 2001, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012; Simpsonville Kudzu Art Show 2003 and 2004; Upstate Visual Arts Competition, 2004; South Carolina Festival of Flowers 2003, 2005; Spartanburg Guild Show 2005, 2006, 2015, 2016; and many others.

Karen White

Karen White

June 3 – Karen White (Flight Patterns) at Pawleys Plantation

The New York Times bestselling author tells the story of a woman coming home to the family she left behind – and to the woman she always wanted to be… Georgia Chambers has spent her life sifting through other people’s pasts while trying to forget her own. But then her work as an expert of fine china – especially of Limoges – requires her to return to the one place she swore she’d never revisit… It’s been thirteen years since Georgia left her family home on the coast of Florida, and nothing much has changed, except that there are fewer oysters and more tourists. She finds solace seeing her grandfather still toiling away in the apiary where she spent much of her childhood, but encountering her estranged mother and sister leaves her rattled. Seeing them after all this time makes Georgia realize that something has been missing – and unless she finds a way to heal these rifts, she will forever be living vicariously through other people’s remnants. To embrace her own life – mistakes and all – she will have to find the courage to confront the ghosts of her past and the secrets she was forced to keep…

June 10 – Amber Brock (A Fine Imitation) at Kimbel’s, Wachesaw

Vera Bellington’s life at the top of society in New York City in 1923 is everything she was groomed for in her youth. She has the money, the influential (if distant) husband, and the social cachet. But her pedigree and privilege can’t protect her from the upheaval her relationship with a talented and handsome muralist brings. More troubling are the artist’s secrets, and confronting them eventually forces Vera to make a choice similar to one she made ten years earlier, in a friendship that nearly ruined her.

TUESDAY, June 14 – Leila Meacham (Titans) at Pawleys Plantation

Texas in the early 1900s, its inhabitants still traveling by horseback and barely familiar with the telephone, was on the cusp of an oil boom that, unbeknownst to its residents, would spark a period of dramatic changes and economic growth. In the midst of this transformative time in Southern history, two unforgettable characters emerge and find their fates irrevocably intertwined: Samantha Gordon, the privileged heiress to the sprawling Las Tres Lomas cattle ranch near Fort Worth, and Nathan Holloway, a sweet-natured and charming farm boy from far north Texas. As changes sweep the rustic countryside, Samantha and Nathan’s connection drives this narrative compulsively forward as they love, lose, and betray. In this grand yet intimate novel, Meacham once again delivers a heartfelt, big-canvas story full of surprising twists and deep emotional resonance.

TUESDAY, June 21 – Elin Hilderbrand (Here’s To Us) at Pine Lakes Country Club, Myrtle Beach

In her 17th novel New York Times bestselling author Elin Hilderbrand writes about a grieving family that finds solace where they least expect it. Celebrity chef Deacon Thorpe has always been a force of nature with an insatiable appetite for life. But after that appetite contributes to Deacon’s shocking death in his favorite place on earth, a ramshackle Nantucket summer cottage, his (messy, complicated) family is reeling. Now Deacon’s three wives, his children, and his best friend gather on the island he loved to say farewell. As they slowly let go of the resentments they’ve held onto for years and remember the good times, secrets are revealed, confidences are shared, and improbable bonds are formed as this unlikely family says goodbye to the man who brought them all together, for better or worse.

June 24 – Wendy Wax (Sunshine Beach) at Inlet Affairs

USA Today bestselling author Wendy Wax brings back the women (Maddie, Avery and Nikki) of Ten Beach Road and hands them an irresistible new challenge – bringing a historic seaside hotel back to life while fighting with the rest of the cast and crew of Do Over to take back control of the show. There’s nothing that a fresh coat of paint and a few glasses of wine can’t fix…

They will discuss the life cycle of sea turtles, focusing especially on the loggerhead sea turtles that nest on Ocean Isle Beach, NC, every summer. The presentation will include a 14-minute video and a question-and-answer session at the end. Deb Jim Boyce

Jim and Deb Boyce are island coordinators for the Ocean Isle Beach Sea Turtle Protection Organization (OIBSTPO). They are licensed by the NC Wildlife Commission and coordinate a network of approximately 50 volunteers in a year-round effort to promote sea turtles and educate the public about them.

Volunteers are especially active between May and late September when female sea turtles dig their nests and lay their eggs. Volunteers identify and mark the nests, do their best to protect the nests from predators, keep an eye on hatchlings as they make their way from their nests into the ocean, and transport sick and injured sea turtles to the Karen Bealsey Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center at Topsail Island.
