Lunch with Susan Boyer

June 29, 2018 ~ Susan Boyer (Lowcountry Bookshop) at Pastaria 811 in Pawleys Island, SC

Lowcountry PI Liz Talbot returns to the streets of Charleston in the seventh installment of Susan M. Boyer’s USA TODAY bestselling mystery series.

Between an epic downpour and a King Tide, those historic streets are flooded—and dangerous. A late night tragic accident along the Lower Battery leads Liz Talbot straight to her next case. Who’s the client? Well, now, therein lies the first puzzle. When the police arrive at the scene of the accident, Poppy Oliver claims she’s only trying to help. But the dent on the front of her Subaru and the victim’s injuries provoke a certain Charleston police detective’s suspicious nature. A wealthy, anonymous benefactor hires Liz and her partner Nate Andrews to prove Poppy Oliver’s innocence. What exactly was Poppy Oliver up to? Is she a random good Samaritan who happens upon the accident scene? Or perhaps this tragedy wasn’t an accident. She just might be his abused wife’s accomplice. Why does everyone involved in this case have a sudden burning urge for reading material, leading them to the same charming bookshop along the waterfront? From a risqué, exclusive club in an old plantation to an upscale resale shop in the historic King Street shopping district to a downtown graveyard crawling with ghosts, Liz tracks a group of women who band together to help victims of domestic violence. In her most challenging case yet, Liz fears she may find a killer, but justice may prove elusive.

Author Ann Ipock to Speak in Calabash, NC

Author Ann Ipock brings latest in ‘Life Is Short’ series to Sunset River Marketplace on Nov. 9

Ann Ipock will speak at Sunset River Marketplace in Calabash, NC on Thursday, Nov. 9 from 10 to 11 a.m. as part of the eclectic art gallery’s Coffee With the Authors series. The event is free but seating is limited so reservations are required. Call 910.575.5999 to hold your spot.

Ipock is an award-winning Southern author, speaker and humorist, Her writing is at once hilarious, and in the next breath, poignant said Dorothea Benton Frank, the New York Times best-selling author of All Summer Long. Dew On the Kudzu, the Southern writer’s blog said that Ann writes in the vein of Erma Bombeck, but in the gentler, Southern Belle manner – quiet smiles while reading as opposed to snorts.

Life is Short, Pack Your Bags Now! was released in late 2016 and follows Life is Short, I Wish I Was Taller; Life is Short, So Read This Fast! and Life is Short, But It’s Wide and completes the Life is Short quartet. It explores the beautiful yet strange human race: elderly ladies hogging church pews, ridiculous Siri voice interpretations, and marital matches not made in heaven. Other subjects include holiday hysteria, kitchen misadventures including a large ham that needs its own seat belt and, of course, travel: bad vacation karma and tips on never packing light. Ipock’s zany humor is balanced by nostalgic tales of growing up in the sixties and affectionate family portraits, from her dancing 85-year old father to her lovable (but hairy) Grandog, Gus.

Ipock has written for Georgetown Times, South Carolina’s oldest newspaper; Sasee Magazine; Columbia County Magazine and Salt Magazine. She has taught at the South Carolina Writer’s Workshop in Myrtle Beach, the Foothills Writers Guild Conference at Anderson University, and was selected as a judge for Catfish Stew anthology, as well as the Silver Coast Winery’s Short Stories.

For each feast, the chef prepares an exquisite menu, typically unavailable during the restaurant’s public hours. The presentation precedes the meal. An award-winning writer makes her debut with this mesmerizing page-turner in the spirit of Everything I Never Told You and Olive Kitteridge. Out for a hike one scorching afternoon in Sycamore, Arizona, a newcomer to town stumbles across what appear to be human remains embedded in the wall of a dry desert ravine. As news of the discovery makes its way around town, Sycamore’s longtime residents fear the bones may belong to Jess Winters, the teenage girl who disappeared suddenly some eighteen years earlier, an unsolved mystery that has soaked into the porous rock of the town and haunted it ever since. In the days it takes the authorities to make an identification, the residents rekindle stories, rumors, and recollections both painful and poignant as they revisit Jess’s troubled history. In resurrecting the past, the people of Sycamore will find clarity, unexpected possibility, and a way forward for their lives.

Skillfully interweaving multiple points of view, Bryn Chancellor knowingly maps the bloodlines of a community and the indelible characters at its heart – most notably Jess Winters, a thoughtful, promising adolescent poised on the threshold of adulthood.

Evocative and atmospheric, Sycamore is a coming-of-age story, a mystery, and a moving exploration of the elemental forces that drive human nature – desire, loneliness, grief, love, forgiveness, and hope – as witnessed through the inhabitants of one small Arizona town.

Author Paul Grimshaw to speak at Sunset River Marketplace

Sunset River Marketplace art gallery in Calabash, NC will feature Syracuse, NY native Paul Grimshaw at its Coffee With the Authors event on Thursday, Oct. 12 from 10 to 11 a.m. Grimshaw is a fulltime freelance journalist, living in his adopted state, South Carolina, since 1997. As a participant in more than a dozen Civil War reenactments, Grimshaw was moved by the job these living historians do, taking the participant and spectator to a place of suspended disbelief. In his debut novel, Travelers of the Gray Dawn, he goes one step further, to ask the “What if” questions.

A unique combination of genres, Travelers of the Gray Dawn, published in 2013, mixes thriller, alternate history and science fact and fiction with a healthy dose of cautionary tale and love story. Reflecting the spirit of storytellers such as Rod Serling and Michael Crichton, the fast-paced novel is filled with likable characters and intriguing “what-ifs” about a modern world without the benefit of a United States of America. The themes and storyline come together to entertain and urge readers to consider their own understanding of how events of the past shaped our present day (for better or worse) and why we are who we are and of America’s place in the evolution of the world we know.

Voyagers of the Gray Dawn: Finding Henry is the 2015 follow-up to Travelers of the Gray Dawn. The story unfolds in Princeton, NJ as Henry Rollins, a prodigious young PhD physics professor and assistant to Albert Einstein, is caught up in the tumultuous exploits of World War II U.S. Naval top-secret experimentation. As Einstein’s miscalculations and a stowaway Nazi spy interfere, the young doctor is hurled headlong into a world he’s only heard rumor of; a parallel universe where the Confederate States of America is the governing body over a good deal of the former Unites States of America. Back home, Rollins’ equally young and brilliant wife Margaret, is desperate to reunite with her missing husband, and may just have a clue where he is. Filled with historical facts and alternate history imaginings, Rollins’ epic travels, hinted at in the first book, are explored in detail this time.

Fall lecture series Features author Arleen Mercorella

Sunset River Marketplace art gallery in Calabash, NC, resumes its schedule of Coffee With the Authors events with a presentation by Arleen Mercorella on Thursday, Sept. 14 from 10 to 11 a.m.

Mercorella’s book, titled A Matter of Survival, the Story of Frances, is the poignant story of her own mother’s challenging life and descent into Alzheimer’s disease.

From the time Frances was born, the odds were stacked against her. She was born to Italian immigrants in 1917; her father resented her for being a girl, and her mother resented her for being born at all.

And when a rift in the family left the girl and her mother alone and penniless, things managed to get even worse: she wound up in an orphanage, lonely and scared.

But the same girl who spent her formative years facing feelings of abandonment and isolation managed to grow into a woman full of positivity and gratitude, overcoming astounding obstacles and never showing a hint of bitterness. Mercorella handles her tale with particular grace.

The event is free, but seating is limited so reservations are required. Call the gallery at 910.575.5999 to hold your spot or sign up online.
