Go Fly a Kite at the Museum of Coastal Carolina on March 5

CalvinTaltavall

Kite making! The perfect fun project! Come to the Museum of Coastal Carolina at 11:00 on Mar. 5 and let Museum volunteer and docent Bruce Stedman show you how to make a sled kite from trash bags, dowel rods, and masking tape. All kite-making materials will be provided. Sled kites are simple to make and are usually very good fliers. Mr. Stedman will also talk about the history of kites and kite construction. Children who come to this program should be accompanied by an adult who can help them with kite construction. Construction time is about 45 minutes. When you have made your kite, walk one block to Ocean Isle Beach and give your new kite its first test flight!

Bruce Stedman is a retired science/math/computer teacher from Maine who now lives in Sunset Beach with his wife, Sharon. While still in Maine, Bruce volunteered at the Owls Head Transportation Museum where he assisted the education director for four years developing and presenting outreach programs for local schools.

The Museum of Coastal Carolina is located at 21 East Second Street, Ocean Isle Beach, NC.  The museum is open on Friday and Saturday from 10 to 3. Admission to the museum is free for Museum members. Non-member all-day admission (including NC sales tax) is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors, $7 for children (3-12), and free for age 2 and under. F. Richard Myers presents a program at Ingram Planetarium called “Mission Overview: James Webb Space Telescope”  Mar. 5 at 7 PM. Myers calls the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) – scheduled to launch in 2018 — “one of the most audacious space programs in decades.” It will be placed approximately 1 million miles from Earth – much further out than the Hubble Space Telescope. The largest and most sophisticated space telescope ever conceived, the JWST promises to continue the legacy of the Hubble and, in the process, revolutionize humanity’s understanding of the universe and our place in it.

Rich Myers is currently a member of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope Ground Segment and Operations team serving as the JWST Test Coordinator. He is employed by Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems, the primary contractor responsible for developing the JWST. Myers’s role evolves over time and spans all phases of development, including design, integration, test, flight operations team training, launch, commissioning of the Observatory, and ultimately executing the science mission.

A Connecticut native, Myers received degrees from the University of Rochester in physics and astronomy in 1998. He spent three years working on naval ballistic missile defense programs before joining NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory Flight Operations Team in 2001. He transitioned to the Goddard Space Flight Center and the James Webb program in 2009. Among a number of achievements recognized by NASA, Myers was awarded the James Webb Space Telescope Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2014.
