Blues Harmonica Master Lee Oskar Headlines at Cape Fear Blues Festival

Blues fans are in for a special treat when the Cape Fear Blues Society welcomes blues harmonica master and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominee Lee Oskar to Wilmington during the 19th Annual Cape Fear Blues Festival. There’s no one in the music world quite like Lee Oskar. He is a founding member and former lead harmonica player for the 1970s funk/jazz band, WAR. His signature harp solos helped define the WAR sound (think “Cisco Kid” and “Why Can’t We Be Friends”). In 1976 he earned Billboard’s title of #1 Instrumental Artist of the Year. In 1983 he created a successful line of Lee Oskar Harmonicas. In recent years Oskar has performed and recorded solo. By his own admission his harp playing has become more aggressive, evolving into a lead instrument. As this year’s Special Guest at the Cape Fear Blues Festival, Lee Oskar will perform at several events, along with touring blues artists, noted regional performers, and talented local blues musicians performing in a variety of genres. Wilmington’s premier music venues—the Rusty Nail SaloonTed’s Fun On The River, and The Art Factory—will host the 2014 Cape Fear Blues Festival. May 17, 2014

A one-hour presentation followed by a two-hour shipboard exploration comprise this engaging program.

The tour is limited to 12 participants age 18 and older. It is not appropriate for those who have difficulty climbing narrow ladders or over knee-high hatches. NORTH CAROLINA AZALEA FESTIVAL, AN EPIC CELEBRATION OF SPRING

There’s no place like Wilmington, North Carolina and its island beaches during the spring when millions of azaleas are bursting with colorful blooms. The lush flowering landscape provides an idyllic backdrop for an epic Southern-style celebration known as the North Carolina Azalea Festival, a Southeast Tourism Society Top 20 Event. The 67th Annual North Carolina Azalea Festival will be held April 9-13, 2014 in Wilmington, North Carolina.

As the stage is set in early April, Wilmingtonians invite friends, family and visitors to help celebrate the season with Southern hospitality, style and fanfare. An annual tradition since 1948, the North Carolina Azalea Festival pays tribute to the rich history, arts, culture and natural beauty of Wilmington, North Carolina’s historic river district and the island beaches of Carolina BeachKure Beach, and Wrightsville Beach.  Perennial festival highlights include the Cape Fear Garden Club’s Azalea Belles who dress in hoop skirts to greet visitors and honor an era past. There’s also an elaborate 3-hour parade on Saturday morning, complete with azalea-laden floats, marching bands, clowns, show animals, local pageant winners and celebrity guests, including Queen Azalea (TBA). This year’s parade includes a Best Entry contest. There are also juried arts and craft shows, a traveling circus, fireworks (Saturday night), and a street fair (Sat./Sun.) with exhibits, vendors, live entertainment and kids’ activities.

Signature associated events include the Cape Fear Garden Club’s Azalea Garden TourApril 11-13, one of the South’s longest-running and most popular garden tours. The 61st annual Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Garden Tour theme is “For the Love of Gardening.” This year’s tour showcases 13 private and public gardens that include a mix of established and new lovingly tended landscapes. Garden tour price includes free admission to Airlie Gardens on Saturday and Sunday. For details and tickets:www.capefeargardenclub.org/azalea-garden-tour. Another time-honored sanctioned event is the Azalea Home Tour, April 12 and 13, showcasing nine private homes and a church of historical and architectural interest. Homes are chosen to represent the wide variety of architectural styles found in Wilmington. For home tour tickets: www.historicwilmington.org.

New this year is a N.C. Azalea Festival App that makes it easier than ever for attendees to keep up with event information by providing breaking entertainment news, behind-the-scenes buzz, and insider tips (App details at www.ncazaleafestival.org).

Live music is a big part of every N.C. Azalea Festival. This year’s headline acts include the quintessential jam band Widespread Panic and country artist Justin Moore’s “Off The Beaten Path” tour with fellow musicians Randy Houser and Josh Thompson.WidespreadPanic_013

Widespread Panic is an Athens, Georgia rock band that’s risen to elite status among American jam bands since its formation in 1986. The current lineup includes John Bell, John “JoJo” Hermann, Jimmy Herring, Todd Nance, Domingo S. Ortiz, and Dave Schools. Renowned for packed live performances, Widespread Panic is often compared to jam band legends such as the Grateful Dead and Phish. Widespread Panic will perform two concerts during the N.C. Azalea Festival on Friday, April 11th and on Saturday, April 12th. Both Widespread Panic concerts begin at 8:00 p.m. and gates open at 6:00 p.m.

Justin Moore, a two-time American Country Award nominee, released his third album “Off The Beaten Path” last fall. His number one hits include “Small Town USA” and “Til My Last Day.” On Thursday, April 10th, fans can enjoy Moore’s trademark rowdy, sentimental performance with opening acts by up-and-coming country artists Randy Houser (“How Country Feels”) and Josh Thompson (“Way Out Here”). The Off The Beaten Path concert begins at 8:00 p.m.; gates open at 6:00 p.m.

All headline concerts are outdoors on the Miller Lite Main Stage at the Cape Fear Community College Campus in Downtown Wilmington (411 N. Front Street). Battleship Takes Green Initiative Strides

Earlier this year, the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA took significant steps to become more energy efficient and environmentally conscious.

In February 2013, Moran Environmental Recovery based in Wilmington, NC, removed over 15,000 gallons of WWII-era bunker fuel from eight separate port side bow tanks. More than 225,000 gallons of similar fuel oil remains onboard in various internal storage tanks.  Removal of fuel oil is part of a long-term hull repair strategy and is critical to both the renovation of the Battleship and protection of the environment.

During the month of April, Greentech Solutions Group based in Raleigh, NC, converted the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA store, exhibit hall and visitor’s center to the latest LED and high efficiency fluorescent lighting technology as part of a project that will drastically reduce energy consumption and allow the Battleship to redirect the savings in energy costs to the renovation of the Memorial.  This project got its start after North Carolina State University Energy Solutions’ team conducted a comprehensive energy assessment, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, of the Battleship and the visitor center that resulted in a number of energy conservation recommendations.

”We need to continue to be good stewards of the environment and of the Battleship Memorial by reducing our energy consumption and our environmental footprint.  These efforts support those goals,” says Chris Vargo, Assistant Director at the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA.

Vargo states, “Lighting upgrades to the store and visitor center will save the Battleship an estimated $40,000 over the next ten years in energy and maintenance costs.  Our next step is to develop a similar lighting project for the ship itself that will fit into our budget and that maintains the historic fabric of the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA.”

The Battleship NORTH CAROLINA is self-supporting, not tax supported and relies primarily upon admissions to tour the Ship, sales in the Ship’s Store, donations and investments. No funds for its administration and operation come from appropriations from governmental entities at the local, state or federal levels. Located at the junction of Highways 17/74/76/421 on the Cape Fear River.   Visit www.battleshipnc.com or follow us on Facebook.com/ncbb55 and Twitter.com/battleshipnc for more information.
