Turtle Talk at Museum of Coastal Carolina

Emily Read will be hosting “Turtle Talk”, a lecture all about sea turtles and sea turtle hospitals. The event is May 4 at the Museum of Coastal Carolina at 11 a.m.

Join us as Read covers various topics throughout her lecture such as; various species of sea turtles, their biology/life cycles, hatching/nest building, and nest monitoring.

As a volunteer of the OIBSTPO (Ocean Isle Beach Sea Turtle Protection Organization), Read engages in an effort to help as many adolescent sea turtles, as possible, survive. Read’s love and drive to protect and help animals led her to obtain a degree in Veterinary Medicine.

Read joined OIBSTPO after observing her very first Loggerhead sea turtle nest hatch back in 2015, and has been doing her best to spread sea turtle awareness as well as conservation tips. It was Read’s passion for science, learning, and helping that motivated her to eventually obtain a Master’s Degree in Biology.

On February 16, at 11 a.m., Roy Revis will present “How Shells are Formed,” at the Museum of Coastal Carolina.

The event will reveal the composition, shapes and colors of the creatures who build these sea shells and leave them behind for coastal explorers.

The Great Backyard Bird Count

The Museum of Coastal Carolina presents a workshop on February 9, 2019, aimed at creating excitement about the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC).

During the GBBC, all you have to do is spend 15 minutes identifying and counting birds in your own back yard (or anywhere you choose) on February 16. Having trouble distinguishing between bird species? That’s where this workshop comes in handy.

The program will highlight what birds you are likely to see in this area, show you how to identify different bird species, and explain how to count birds for the GBBC and report your results. In addition, the museum gift shop sells bird identification reference books.

The GBBC is held annually in February and is a joint project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society with Canadian partner Bird Studies Canada.

Last year, more than 180,000 people participated in the GBBC, sighting over 6,000 different birds. According to the Audubon Society, this was the most detailed snapshot of global bird populations ever undertaken.

To find out more about these and other trends from the 2018 count, visit www.birdcount.org, and don’t miss some of the great photos submitted to the GBBC photo contest!

Sunset River Marketplace, the eclectic art gallery in Calabash, NC, will present works by Rachel Rourke Sunnell in a show titled Skies of Coastal Carolina, which is set to run from Sept. 5 through Oct. 6. Viewers will have an opportunity to meet the artist at the gallery’s Saturday Open House on Sept. 8 from 2 – 5 p.m.

After moving to Ocean Isle Beach, she joined Studio 12, a painting group that meets weekly at Sunset River Marketplace.

She says, “As an acrylic painter, I use loose brush strokes and color that evoke the idea of subjective realism. This refers to the reality inside your mind, perhaps a memory or a feeling. I strive to capture something that just feels good, past or present. My goal is to share my observations of nature with visual clues of light, movements and color.”

Artist Rachel Rourke Sunnell, Sea Oats, acrylic

Sunnelle’s work recently earned her a First Place award at the 2018 Waterway Art Association Annual Show.

Rachel Rourke Sunnell is a member of Brunswick Arts Council, Waterway Art Association and Associated Artists of Southport. She is also a licensed landscape architect in North Carolina and Maine.

Sunset River Marketplace showcases work by approximately 150 North and South Carolina artists, and houses some 10,000 square feet of oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, mixed media, art glass, fabric art, pottery, sculpture, turned and carved wood and artisan-created jewelry.

Fontana Dam. Power to Win!

The Museum of Coastal Carolina is pleased to welcome Ronnie Bryant to the Sandbar Lecture Series as he presents “Fontana Dam: Power to win!” on Tuesday July 31 in the Hayden O’Neal Learning Center at the Museum of Coastal Carolina.

Fontana Dam is a hydroelectric dam on the Little Tennessee River in Swain and Graham Counties in North Carolina.  The dam was signed into existence by the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1941 primarily due to the need for electrical power in the production of aluminum for the war effort (WWII).

The building of Fontana Dam and its reservoir required the purchase of 68,292 acres of land, 5,125 acres of forest that had to be cleared. Four towns, 1,311 families, 1,047 graves, and over 60 miles of roads had to be relocated. The village of Welch Cove (later renamed Fontana Village) was constructed just south of the dam to house the project’s workers, whose numbers had reached 5,000 by 1943, in spite of nationwide manpower shortages.

Come walk through history with Ronnie as we looks at the many facets of completion of such a massive project and some of the strange stories that accompanied this accomplishment!

Ronnie Bryant is a Clinton, NC, native where he attended and graduated from Clinton High School. He pursued an Associate’s Degree in Computer Technologies with Sampson Community College where he graduated in 1996 and worked as System Administrator. From there he attended and graduated from Mount Olive College with a Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Development followed by a Master of Arts degree in Educational Media: Instructional Computers Technology from Appalachian State University.  Ronnie is currently the Chief Information Officer at Brunswick Community College.

Ronnie and his wife, Terry, have 4 children and 8 grand-children. Their most treasured moments are when they spend time with family.  He also enjoys Civil War reenacting with the Charlotte Artillery, and educating the public about the history associated with this era.

Museum of Coastal Carolina is located at 21 East Second Street, Ocean Isle Beach, NC. Admission to the museum is free for members. Adventures & Challenges: Reflections on a Marine Corps Career

The Museum of Coastal Carolina is proud to host Adventures & Challenges: Reflections on a Marine Corps Career presented by retired Lt.Col. D. Leigh Sumner of the United States Marine Corp. as part of the summer Sandbar Lecture Series.  Her lecture will be on July 24th at 6 pm.

Sumner will be discussing the long and winding path she took from her enlistment and boot camp at Paris Island, South Carolina, through her variety of assignments, adventures, and personal challenges that culminated in a 23-year career.  Included in the discussion, will be patriotism and community service both in and out of the uniform, as well as, her accomplishments and regrets.

Sumner will also discuss the changing nature of war and its impact of society, evolving national security and women in the modern military; as well as, life after military service.  This lecture will be articulated through personal accounts and stories with audience participation strongly encouraged to create a fun and exciting event.

Sumner enlisted in 1983 and was recruited into the Defense Language Institute where she learned Russian and later in Quantico, Virginia, where she completed officer candidate school.  She was commissioned as second lieutenant in 1985.  From there, she served in a series of posts in command assignments and as an intelligence officer.

In 1996, while cleaning up hurricane damage in North Carolina, Leigh sustained a spinal cord injury leaving her partially paralyzed from the waist down.  With aggressive therapy and fitness rehabilitation, she was able to pass her fitness standards and remained on the active duty list for the remainder of her career.

While serving in Latvia as a defense representative and US Defense attaché, Leigh adopted four children and retired back to North Carolina in 2006.  She has since begun Sumner Fitness & Rehabilitation where she works with a variety of patients, ranging from the fully disabled to the fully well-bodied.

Leigh is a committed athlete and proud member of Paralyzed Veterans Racing.  She has placed in several races including the 2015 Army Ten Miler, the 2015 Marine Corp Marathon, the 2016 Paracycling Nationals and the 2016 National Veterans Wheelchair Games.
